Characters

The railway has many characters who work, travel and live near the railway. This page will give you their names and their backstory to introduce them to you.

Bernard Banger

Bernard is a friendly chap and is Merrytwits resident butcher. He is married to Sandra and has recently become a Father to little Abigail. He can be seen at his shop and also on the trains when his young wife drags him into town to spend some money on her and the baby.

Sandra and Abigail Banger

Sandra is a young lady who married the towns butcher, Bernard. She enjoys a rather good life as the people of Merrytwit do like their meat meals. Recently she gave birth to her daughter Abigail who she adores and has spent much of Bernards money on. She can often be seen at her home or riding the trains into Twitington to spend more of her husbands income.

Mary Gnotole

Originally from Dingle, the valley over from Merrytwit, Mary is married to Fred Gnotole. The Dingle Dangles were once Lords of the Manor but time and money saw them fall from grace. Marriage to Fred with the money from his Fathers carpentry business seemed to be a way out of it. Unfortunately Fred is a terrible wood worker but a wonderful bin man so the Dangles dreams of a return to riches was thwarted. Mary very rarely talks to Fred but the marriage produced 2 children. Tristran, their son currently abroad with the army, and Susan their fair daughter married to the Reverend Kershaw.

Fred Gnotole

Fred is married to Mary and, despite his wifes hopes, turned out to not be a very rich man but he was happy with his job as the bin man of the valley. His Father owns Gnotole Carpentry who maintain Sam T Claus's sleigh, and he was very disappointed that his son did not follow him into the business but happy that his son found his own little niche. Fred rarely talks to his wife spending most of his spare time with his Grandson Simon.

Susan Crumb

Mrs Crumb, Daughter of Mary and Fred, is married to Reverend Kershaw Crumb. They have one child, their son Simon who can usually be seen riding the trains with his Grandad whilst clutching his Teddy Bear Patch

Simon Crumb

Young Simon is the son of Susan Crumb and Reverend Kershaw and can usually be seen with his Grandad on the railway clutching his Teddy called Patch.

Kane Hartley

Kane is the resident signalman at Merrytwit. He can usually be seen plling the levers and seeing off the trains unless it is his day off and Freddy is doing the job. He enjoys winding up his staunchly Tory station Master by wearing his red tie instead of the usual blue one.

Willie Thrasher

This little chap is Willie Thrasher, son of Dick and Fanny and younger brother of Julie. He can usually be seen travelling to and from school or to the shops in the railcars.

Mr Mooney Maker

Stood on Merrytwit's platform this is Mr Mooney Maker the Banker who is awaiting the arrival of the early morning train to Twitington where he is Manager of the branch.

Dick Thrasher

Here we see Mr Dick Thrasher, husband of Fanny and Father to Julie, waiting for his train to be readied for the start of the day. He is usually to be seen driving the railcars to and from Twitington.

Ben Tover

The line has two brothers working for it, the first of them to be introduced is Ben Tover, the lines oldest driver.

Len Tover

Ben's brother, Len, the Tover brothers will usually be seen in the local pub, The Moaning Cow, where they are usually hidden behind a pile of emptying pint glasses.

Miss Julie Thrasher

The daughter of Dick and Fanny, Julie is an exceptional engineer and the driver of No. 3 and also the girlfriend of Freddie the Flag

Miss Millicent Cockburn

Miss Cockburn is the well known Spinster of the Parish who is chairwoman of the local W.I. and despite her rather severe look is a pleasant lady with a good demeanor, She can usually be seen riding between Twittington and Merrytwit, her home village

Freddy 'the Flag' Jones

The lines resident guard/signal man, he lives just outside the station in his cottage and is generally seen manning the signal box and occasionally acting as a train guard when required. He is currently walking out with Julie the driver of No. 3.

Mr Sam T. Claus

And you thought he lived at the north Pole, no, that was just to throw NORAD off his trail. He actually lives in a cottage in Twitington along with his reindeer. His sleigh is maintained by a local carpenter and he has his own train that comes out during the festive season.

Kevin - Chief Mechanic

Nobody knows where he came from or if his name is more than simply Kevin. However he is a dab hand with the spanners and works for banana's.

Burtram Olivier Brunel - Chief Engineer

Whilst not related to his namesake he is a rather good designer of narrow gauge railways and the Merrytwit Light Railway is his latest. Whilst he is of the larger girth and a owner of a rather hairy dermis he is a rather nice chap and is a regular sight on the railway wearing his splendid stove pipe top hat (not in the picture as it was rather windy).
